Why most cats and dairy do not mix
Adult cats often lose much of the enzyme needed to digest lactose, which is why cow’s milk and many dairy products lead to gas, cramping, and diarrhea. Kittens may tolerate specially formulated kitten milk replacers, but for healthy adult cats, water and a complete cat diet are safer than routine dairy treats.
Safety guides in this category
Milk
CautionCaution: Most adult cats are actually lactose intolerant. Drinking cow’s milk can cause severe stomach cramps, gas, and diarrhea.
Cheese
CautionCaution: Like milk, cheese contains lactose. While a tiny nibble of hard cheese might be tolerated, it frequently leads to digestive issues.
Ice Cream
CautionCaution: Cats should avoid ice cream. They are naturally lactose intolerant, and the high sugar content provides no nutritional value and can cause upset stomachs.
